Deborah Klein was born in Melbourne in 1951.
She completed a Bachelor of Arts, Printmaking at Chisholm Institute of Technology in 1984, a Graduate Diploma at Gippsland School of Art, and was awarded a Master of Visual Arts at Monash University in 1997.
Klein has held regular solo exhibitions of her printmaking, painting and drawing since 1987. Her exhibition The Pirate Jenny Prints toured Regional Galleries and Commercial Galleries throughout Australia from 1989 to 1992.
Klein’s work was included in People in a Landscape, a survey exhibition of contemporary Australian prints touring Taiwan, Philippines, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Germany, Switzerland, Turkey, Russia and Germany (2000 – 2004). Her work has been selected for many other group exhibitions including Cutting Comments: Contemporary Linocuts, touring Nationally (2000-2001), and Place Made, at the National Gallery of Australia (2004). In 2001 Klein was awarded the Arts Victoria Touring Grant for Common Thread, a joint exhibition with Catherine Pilgrim and Shane Jones, which toured Regional Galleries throughout Australia.
Awards include the Jacaranda Drawing Prize (1996, 1998), Australian Printmedia Award (1996, 1997), Rena Ellen Jones Memorial Print Award (1997, 1998, 1999), Grand Prize: Silk Cut Award (1997), The Shell Art Prize (1998), MLC Acquisitive Award, The Print Council Member Print Commission (1998), and Artist in Residence at the National Gallery of Victoria (1996).
Klein’s work is held in the Collections of the National Gallery of Australia, National Gallery of Victoria (Education Services), Sate Library of Victoria, Art Gallery of South Australia, Queensland Art Gallery and Regional Galleries and Universities throughout Australia.
Deborah Klein has lectured in Printmaking and Drawing at RMIT University since 1999 and currently lives in Melbourne.
