Biography
Born in Australia, Gaye Paterson graduated from East Sydney National Art School in Graphic Design in 1971.
She first lived and worked in Sydney and London, then later as a publications designer for the Australian Government in Canberra.
Paterson was nurtured in the skills of printmaking by Jorg Schmeisser and Dianne Fogwell at the Canberra School of Art, where she was seduced by etching with its tactile process of plate, ink and paper. Her passion for pots emerged when she met archaeologists in Jordan in 1979. She later spent 3 years in Thailand taking inspiration from the discovery of kilns at Si Sachanali, and established Inky Fingers Etching Studio in Bangkok.
From 1993 to 1997 Paterson taught printmaking at the Canberra Institute of Art, Australian National University and in 1997 was awarded a grant from the ACT Cultural Funding Program.
In 1998 she was Artist in Residence at Prilep Artist Colony, Macedonia and returned to Australia in 1999 to hold a residency at the Australian National University, Canberra. Other residencies include SkopArt Skopelos Foundation of the Arts, Greece in 2002 and the Frans Masereel Centre, Belgium in 2003 and 2004.
Paterson’s Amphora series emerged form the Agean during her residency in Greece in 2002. The boxed portfolio of 20 woodblock images was completed in March 2004 at the Australian National University, Edition+Artist Book Studio. A selection of these works were exhibited in Paris in June 2004.
Currently based in Geneva, Paterson has lived, worked and exhibited all over the world and is placed in many collections in Australia and Overseas.
